Happy New Year!

Tomorrow is our Community Lecture at the Dublin Library at 5:30, we hope to see you all there. Dr. Ulm is going to be speaking on the 4 pillars of health. We are going to focus on one of these pillars as a goal for the month of January. Movement. The CCRC docs are committing to at least 15 minutes of movement a day for the month of January. We will be documenting our movement on our Instagram account. We are encouraging anyone was wants to join in to use the hashtag #CCRCmovementchallenge so we can follow along.

We are focusing on movement every day. That could be a long run, super intense workout, or just going for a walk or stretching. The idea is to set the habit and consistency. It won’t come as a shock to anyone when I say that exercise is good for you. So, let’s talk about the benefits of exercise (in no particular order)

  • Cardiovascular Health: regular exercise can decrease your resting heart rate, blood pressure, reduce atherosclerosis and make your heart and blood vessels stronger. With heart disease being the number 1 cause of death, it seems like this one goes without saying.

  • Mental Health: exercise increases endorphins, improves blood flow to your brain, improves concentration, can stimulate growth of and connections to neurons, improves sleep, and can combat common issues like seasonal depression. Some new research is even suggesting a relationship between exercise and cognitive decline with age.

  • Muscles, Bones, Joints: consistent movement is the best way to ensure joint health, protect bone density, and strengthen muscles.

  • Metabolic Health: movement increases your metabolic rate which helps in weight loss and more energy throughout the day. As we age, our metabolism slows naturally. The best way to combat this is to get in the routine of daily movement.

Exercise is important. We will be doing all kinds of workouts this month ranging from CrossFit type classes, cycling, running, weightlifting, kettlebell swings, yoga, stretching, all the way to just going outside for a walk (weather pending). The goal this month is to move every day. We will be sharing our escapades and are looking forward to seeing yours if you want to jump in on the challenge.
